Postdoctoral Research Fellow (100%) at the Professorship for Global Security & Technology (m/f/d)

The Professorship for Global Security & Technology is looking for a PostDoc (m/f/d) 100% for up to three years in the DFG project "Security threats and fragile commitments: Stress-testing German support for human rights at home and abroad" with a start date of September 1st, 2023.

The project is conducted in collaboration with Prof. Sabine Carey (University of Mannheim) and investigates whether and how support for human rights can be strengthened in times of crisis. In several innovative survey experiments (including video experiments) conducted among the German adult population, we explore theoretically and empirically how support for human rights is shaped by potential threats people might face, the types of rights that might be restricted to address the threat, and by exposure to deliberative arguments about the trade-off between security and rights.

Your responsibilities:

  • Conducting research in the DFG project "Security threats and fragile commitments: Stress-testing German support for human rights at home and abroad"
  • Contribution to the design, implementation, and analysis of a survey panel and survey experiments
  • Conducting quantitative analyses with primary and secondary data
  • Preparing and co-authoring scientific publications of research results with the team
  • Presenting results of the research project at international conferences
  • Contributing to the administrative tasks of the project

Your qualifications:

  • Excellent dissertation (or near to completion) in political science, sociology, or a related social science discipline relevant to the project
  • Research interests related to the project
  • Excellent knowledge of quantitative research methods, knowledge in survey design and experiments desirable
  • Strong communication skills and enthusiasm for the topic
  • Fluency in spoken and written English, German is a plus
  • Skills in the creation, editing and production of videos are an asset
  • Experience in coordinating research projects and in team work in international research teams is an advantage
