Dear Colleagues - especially recent/soon-to-be PhDs,

Allow me call your attention to a special 2-year research-only postdoctoral research fellowship (and related events) here at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), which might have escapted the attention of many social scientists.  The details are below and at https://www.tum.de/en/research/postdocs/research-opportunities-week/ as well as https://www.tum.de/en/research/postdocs/tum-global-postdoc-fellowship/, but here are the highlights:

  • Deadline to apply for the TUM "Research Opportunities Week" (stage 1 of the fellowship competition):
THIS Sunday, 14 March 2021 (end of the day CET).  Apply at: https://tum.gomovein.com/

  • Recent or soon-to-be non-TUM PhDs, only (awarded no earlier than 1 May 2018; soon-to-be PhDs must be within 12 months of award of the PhD)

  • must be in a field/discipline taught or represented by faculty members at TUM (incl. political science, public policy, economics/business, law, sociology, psychology, philosophy/ethics)

  • Proposed projects should have potential for synergies or cooperation with at least one current faculty member at TUM (need not have contacted TUM professors in advance)

  • Candidates and propoosed projects may fall squarely within the bounds of one discipline or be interdisciplinary

  • Selection process (just as for other society-of-fellows type of applications) is very multi-disciplinary => make sure your cover letter/"letter of motivation" (and later your research statement) are going to be accessible and exciting for readers/selection committee members from various natural science and engineering disciplines, as well as experts in your own field

Initial selection of invitees for the 2021 all-virtual TUM Research Opportunities Week ("ROW") will be annouced by 26 March 2021.  The actual ROW will take place 12-16 April 2021.

The aptly named "Research Opportunities Week" (ROW) is a by-application-and-invitation-only series of events meant to (i) showcase postdoctoral research opportunities at TUM for exceptionally promising emerging scholars and (ii) provide the selected participants with information about a variety of funding opportunities from German and European sources for conducting postdoctoral research at TUM.  In addition, (iii) it allows the ROW participants to the apply for one of several 2-year, research-only fellowships (the TUM Global Postdoc Fellowship).

Candidates from political science and related social sciences have in the last few years still been underrepresented in the ROW applicant pool and are therefore especially encouraged to apply.

Best wishes and good luck!
Tim
