The Department of Political Science at the University of Zurich (www.ipz.uzh.chhttp://www.ipz.uzh.ch/) invites applications for a 4-year PhD position on the research project “Multidimensional polarization and its consequences for democracy in Europe”, led by Dr. Jelle Koedam. The project is funded by an SNSF Ambizione Grant and will be hosted by the Chair of Comparative Politics, held by Prof. Daniele Caramani.

Political parties are divided over different ideological dimensions. In addition to an economic left-right divide, a socio-cultural conflict has formed over issues such as immigration. But what are the consequences of multidimensional polarization for the functioning of democracy in Europe? And how do reinforcing or cross-cutting polarizations affect political engagement, including voter turnout or partisanship? These are but some of the questions that the project will investigate.

The PhD student will have the opportunity to develop their independent research agenda within the broader project. We offer excellent research support, and a supportive and vibrant academic community. Teaching is optional.

For more information on the project or the position, please do not hesitate to reach out to Dr. Jelle Koedam (koedam@ipz.uzh.chmailto:koedam@ipz.uzh.ch).

Deadline: October 31, 2023
Start date: February 1, 2024 (negotiable)
