Dear All,
We are glad to announce the Call for Expressions of Interest for the 3rd MetRiSP Workshop is now open.
The Workshop invites contributions discussing the gulf between explanation/interpretability and prediction/accuracy in political science as opened by Machine Learning algorithms. Its driving questions ask:
(1) Are explanatory theories and models in political science structurally unable to provide accurate predictions, or are some better equipped to deal with "the next instance"?
(2) Do political science models for predictive accuracy necessarily entail a waiver of theoretical interpretability?
(3) Which approaches, technical arrangements or design strategies can ensure predictive accuracy and causal interpretation at the same time? If any, at what price or under what conditions can the integration succeed?
Both theoretical and empirical responses are welcome.
Expressions of interest can be sent via https://bit.ly/MetRiSP3WS until March 31, 2023.
The WS will take place in Genoa on Sept 12-13, 2023. Thanks to the generous contributions from the ecpr/SG on Political Methodology and the SISP, it will be free for all participants. Based on the creativity and soundness of their proposals, grants of up to €500 will be awarded to early-career participants and up to €250 to more experienced contributors in support of their travel and staying expenses.
Please find the extended call as an attachment.
In case of questions, please contact Alessia Damonte at alessia.damonte@unimi.it and/or Federica Genovese at fgenov@essex.ac.uk
Best wishes,
