Dear Colleagues,
Applications are now open for the C-BEAR Summer School: Introduction to Experimental Methods in the Social Sciences, taking place at the University of Southampton from the 29th of June to the 4th of July 2025.
This five-day interdisciplinary workshop introduces participants to the theory and practice of experimental methods, offering a comprehensive overview of laboratory, field, and survey experiments. It is designed for researchers, PhD students, professionals, and practitioners, with a particular focus on those new to experimental methods or looking to expand their knowledge across different approaches. No prior experience with experimental design or statistics is required.
Participants will acquire the skills necessary to design, implement, analyse, and report on experimental research, as well as evaluate experimental studies critically. The course also provides guidance on working with service providers (e.g., Prolific, MTurk, YouGov) and practical training in tools such as Qualtrics, Stata, R, and Excel.
An interdisciplinary team from the Centre for Behavioural, Experimental, and Action Research (C-BEAR) will lead the sessions, drawing on examples from Politics, Economics, Business, and Psychology. The programme includes:
- An introduction to the theoretical foundations of experimental methods
- Hands-on experience with the design and analysis of RCTs, lab, field, and survey experiments
- Interactive group work and applied exercises
- Ethical and practical considerations, including pre-registration and responsible research conduct
Participants are required to bring a device capable of running basic office suites and free versions of R and Stata.
Fees:
£300 for students,
*
£600 for staff at academic or research institutions, in the public sector staff, and at registered charity organisations,
*
