(Apologies for cross-posting)
Dear colleagues
We are pleased to invite you to submit your abstracts to The Handbook on
Financialization and Space (To be published mid-2025 by Edward Elgar
Publishing).
The Handbook aims to map, explain and theorize how capital markets extend
to various types of spaces and reflect on the economic, social, political,
and environmental inequalities that ensue. In the past decade, scholars in
geography have shown significant interest in the interplay between
financial markets and the production and functioning of spaces. These
studies, dispersed across different subfields (including urban, rural,
environmental, and infrastructure studies), investigate the effects of
financialization on both built and natural environments worldwide. They
shed light on how finance influences spatial transformations in domains as
diverse as office complexes, farmlands, forests, hospitals, mines,
airports, water bodies, or wind resources. However, the existing literature
falls short of providing an integrated and systematic exploration of
financialized capitalist geographies.
The Handbook will foster a collective dialogue among scholars (including
early career academics) that transcends disciplinary boundaries and will
draw upon various scholarly traditions to achieve this goal. By addressing
cross-cutting questions, exploring the different actors involved, and
considering global and local phenomena, the Handbook will offer a
comprehensive framework for students, scholars, activists, and public
officials.
