*"How Image-As-Data Approaches Can Help Analysing Protest and Its
Organisation: Methods and Applications"

*Workshop: September 30 to October 1, 2024Free University Berlin

Images are a strong tool to convey messages. Next to text, they are
essential elements in political communication. Images can play important
roles in any political process but are
especially meaningful in situations of high political contestation. As
such, images play a
pivotal role in protest events and their analysis as they can transmit
messages or emotions
that text cannot capture.

In this workshop, we aim to look at how images, and especially how
recently emerging
image-as-data methods, can help analyse, explain, and structure social
uprisings. More
precisely, we want to look at how, for example, images and other types
of visual data can
frame situations, as well as how we can use images to analyse backstage
organisations,
infrastructure and dynamics of protests. Further, we want to look at how
images can be
used to retrieve information for analysing social and protest behaviour.
Finally, we want
to look at automated image analysis as a new avenue of research. As
such, we also want
to draw attention to new methodological techniques and how image-as-data
analysis can be
applied in the Social Sciences.

Our workshop aims to address new methods and challenges for analysing
images in an
automated way. We want to discuss the new challenges of image-as-data
techniques and also
include a small hands-on session in the workshop to learn, apply, and
practice new techniques.
As such, we are looking for interested participants coming from the
field of social movement
studies and/or computational social science broadly defined, who are
studying protest and/or social behaviour through the use of automated
image analysis. We are also interested in
participants with a strong methodological focus on image-as-data techniques.
The workshop is scheduled forSeptember 30 to October 1, 2024 at Free
University

Berlin. Researchers at any stage in their career are welcome to submit
an abstract
untilJune 9, 2024 (250-400 words as pdf) to
rebecca.kittel@fu-berlin.de. Upon
acceptance, a draft paper to the workshop should be submitted by
September 23, 2024. We
are especially keen to have PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers
join the discussion.
Further, we aim for a special issue coming out of this workshop. We are
happy to provide
travel funds and accommodation within the limits of our funding rules,
but we are also
prepared to organize the workshop in a hybrid format. If you have any
questions, do not
hesitate to reach out to us.
