Research Fellow Positions in Data Science and AI at University of Birmingham

Dear Colleagues,

The University of Birmingham is recruiting two Postdoctoral Research Fellows to play critical roles in expanding research efforts emerging from IDAI's research themes. Of particular relevance to computational social scientists is our "Digital Governance, Economy, and Social Impact" theme, which examines how digital transformation is reshaping public institutions and market systems, with a focus on developing innovative approaches to modernising state services while ensuring inclusive benefits from digital technologies.

These strategic appointments will be instrumental in delivering the Institute's mission of promoting research excellence in Data Science methods and AI models while ensuring their principled adoption across disciplines.

Key Details:

  • Full-time positions with salary range £36,130 to £45,413 (potential progression to £48,149)
  • Fixed-term contract up to 31 July 2028
  • Based in newly renovated Elm House, a dedicated space for interdisciplinary research
  • Access to exceptional High Performance Computing facilities, including the Tier-2 Baskerville system
  • Closing date: 27 April 2025

Responsibilities Include:

Developing innovative research programmes aligned with IDAI's themes
Contributing to grant writing and project development
Supporting interdisciplinary collaboration through thematic networks
Engaging with external partners including policymakers and other institutions
Contributing to technology and research horizon scanning

As Director of the Centre for AI in Government and Deputy Director of IDAI, I am particularly interested in encouraging applications from researchers with backgrounds in computational social science who can bridge technical expertise with substantive political and social research questions.
