We are pleased to invite researchers who work on the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia) to submit abstracts for the upcoming workshop Contemporary Politics in the Western Balkans, which will be held on 10-11 April 2025, in Stockholm, Sweden.
Improving democratic governance, reducing corruption, promoting civil society and enhancing political representation are central to the Western Balkans' prospects for stability and development. Transitional justice, crucial for addressing past conflict and building durable peace, remains an essential but contentious question. Meanwhile, the US, the EU, China, Russia and other powers compete for influence among the region's varied states and peoples.
We welcome papers that speak to these (and other) topics: democracy, corruption, political parties, the environment, external influence, transitional justice (including memory politics), security politics, conflict resolution, and the prospects of EU enlargement.
We want this event to be an intellectual exchange and facilitate networking in order to strengthen research related to the Western Balkans. We seek developed papers for presentation at the workshop. Priority will be given to junior scholars, but all scholars with expertise in the region are more than welcome to apply.
The workshop organisers will pay for costs directly related to the conference, including accommodation and meals. Participants are expected to fund their own travel.
Please complete and submit the following form, including a 300-word abstract and a 60-word bio, by November 1 2024. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by November 15.
