Hi EPSA!

The Social and Behavioral Sciences Department (SBS) at Toulouse School of Economics and Quantitative Social Sciences (TSE) is searching for two TT Assistant Professor Positions. Deadline for applications is Jan 31 and reference letters due Feb 10.

The SBS Department seeks to build a network of interdisciplinary scholars committed to conducting research that addresses major societal challenges, including those arising in the context of an increasingly older, heterogeneous, inter-connected, inter-dependent and polarized global population.

The searches are thematic and open to diverse disciplinary backgrounds. However, the second position may be most applicable for those with a political science background (see the description below). The title is “Computational Social Scientist” but I would interpret this as a “Quantitative Social Scientist”.

Assistant Professor in Computational Social Science

Description

We seek candidates with strong research interests in contemporary societal transformations related to the environment, technology, and socio-political organization. Specific research areas may be open and include responses to environmental unpredictability, media use by individuals or institutions, polarization, terrorism, and intergroup relations (e.g., ethnic/religious; immigrant/native; socioeconomic status). Ideal candidates will: promote interdisciplinary research and teaching; specialize in quantitative methods (e.g., behavioral lab and field experiments, mathematical modeling, machine learning, large language models, empirical analysis of large text or geospatial datasets, social network analysis); and have a strong research background in their own discipline while being open to engaging in interdisciplinary scientific activities. Candidates should show a strong ability or potential to lead a research program that can leverage the interdisciplinarity of the SBS department and the strong group of economists at TSE. Research interests close to those already developed at SBS will be viewed favorably.

Candidates should have a PhD in Sociology, Computational Social Science, Complex System Science, Network Science, Computer Science, Informatics, or a related field. Given the many economists already at TSE, we are not looking for candidates with a PhD in Economics but rather those with complementary expertise. Candidates must have completed or plan to complete a PhD no later than August 2024.

Candidates will be able to take advantage of and contribute to significant intellectual resources within TSE. This includes the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse (IAST)https://www.iast.fr/, a unified scientific project whose mission is to foster ground-breaking interdisciplinary research on human behavior. The IAST collaborates closely with the SBS Department. IAST is composed of several research teams, including those specializing in social evolutionhttps://www.iast.fr/social-evolution, moralityhttps://www.iast.fr/expanded-morality, evolution of technologyhttps://www.iast.fr/evolution-technology, leadership, power and inequalityhttps://www.iast.fr/leadership-power-and-inequality-0, and family, demography and healthhttps://www.iast.fr/family-demography-and-health-0. TSE also houses formal thematic centers in Healthhttps://www.tse-fr.eu/health, Energy and Climatehttps://www.tse-fr.eu/energyclimate, Digital Platformshttps://www.tse-fr.eu/digital, and Infrastructure and Networkshttps://www.tse-fr.eu/infrastructure-and-network, and complementary academic groups in “Behavior, Institutions and Developmenthttps://www.tse-fr.eu/groups/behavior-institutions-and-development” and “Environmental and Natural Resource Economicshttps://www.tse-fr.eu/groups/environmental-and-natural-resource-economics”.

Application Instructions

Applicants should submit:

  • A cover letter (maximum 2 pages; addressing current and future research plans)
  • CV
  • Up to three writing samples (e.g., a published peer-reviewed journal article, or a pre-print/working paper)
  • Contact information for 3-4 professional references willing to provide a letter on the candidate’s behalf. References will automatically receive an email notification from TSE once the application has been submitted (they should be instructed to check their spam folder just in case).

The application deadline is January 31, 2024 (reference letters are due February 10). Review of applications will begin immediately after the deadline and continue until the position is filled. Late applications may be considered if the post has not already been filled.

The target start date for this position is September 1, 2024.

Questions should be directed to Virginie Munier (virginie.munier@tse-fr.eumailto:virginie.munier@tse-fr.eu?subject=SBS%20Job%20Opportunities).
