Dear EPSA Colleagues,
Please see the call for applications (below) for a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship at TUM in Munich, which has been announced on rather short notice. It is a research-only fellowship for recent (or very soon-to-be) PhDs (doctorate no earlier than 1 Oct 2019) with special support for pursuing larger, longer-term research funding opportunities. It is co-financed by the university and individual professorships and thus requires a two-stage selection process. Given the tight timeline, I encourage applications by Sept.13.
My team and I welcome applications focused on a broad range of IR/IPE topics (please see below for priority interests).
Please feel free to forward to others who might be interested but might not be on this list.
Best wishes,
Tim
Postdocs in International Political Economy
under the TUM Global Postdoc Fellowship Program
Tim Büthe, Professor for Political Science & Public Policy and Chair for International Relations at the Hochschule für Politik München / Munich School for Politics and Public Policy, Technical University of Munich (TUM), is inviting applications for a 2-year research-only postdoctocal fellowship, under the TUM Global Postdoc Fellowship program, with a starting date possible as early as 1 April 2023 and no later than the end of 2023. Please note that the call for applications for this fellowship has been announced on very short notice; please see information about the timeline for applying below. To be eligible to apply, you must have obtained your doctoral degree (PhD) at a university other than TUM no earlier than 1 October 2019 and no later than summer 2023.
The Hochschule für Politik (HfP) is an interdisciplinary institute for the study of politics and public policy, associated with TUM, one of Germany’s leading research universities. The Chair for International Relations is a research and teaching unit of the HfP, focused on inter- and transnational economic relations. It brings together researchers pursuing active research agendas to make both theoretically exciting and empirically important contributions. We welcome research proposals on any IPE topic, but are particularly interested in:
• Regulatory politics and policy, especially technology governance
• Governance of global markets, including antitrust/competition law, economics and policy
• Comparative and/or international health policy and technological change in health/medicine
• Methodological advances in the study of political economy
Strong analytical skills and the capacity for independent social scientific research will be key selection criteria. Successful applicants will be expected, above all, to develop and pursue their own research within the overarching research agenda of the IR Chair. Postdocs at the IR Chair also participate in ongoing collaborative research projects.
Our Offer
• A postdoctoral position in a vibrant research team with eligibility to apply for longer-term research funding support from German and European sources;
• a fellowship as set out at https://www.tum.de/en/about-tum/careers-and-jobs/postdocs/tum-global-postdoc-fellowship;
• the opportunity to develop your professional research and leadership skills in a high-impact field with excellent career opportunities.
Your Responsibilities
• Conduct cutting-edge research and publish it in top journals (on your own and jointly);
• actively participate in the intellectual life and research activities of the IR Chair.
Your Qualifications
• PhD/doctorate in political science or a related social science discipline (such as economics, public policy, sociology, or law) or a related interdisciplinary field;
• strong methodological skills;
• enthusiasm for working in a team;
• strong ability to communicate in spoken and written English (required; applicants who do not have a degree from an English-language university or program, please indicate proficiency);
• ability to communicate in German valuable, but not required (please indicate proficiency).
How to Apply
The fellowship involves a two-stage selection process. In the first stage, Tim Büthe and the current team at the IR Chair will select two candidates to sponsor, after which your application is forwarded to the university-level selection committee.
To make this possible, please send the following materials electronically (ideally in a single pdf file) by the end of the day on Sunday, 13 November 2022 to ir-chair@hfp.tum.demailto:ir-chair@hfp.tum.de:
• A cover letter, which gives a sense of your scholarly and career interests, your reasons for seeking this fellowship, as well as your preferred starting date;
• a current CV (curriculum vitae, including any publications);
• a research proposal (in English, no more than 4 pages in length) for a research project you hope to carry out in the context of this postdoctoral position;
• transcripts providing specific information about all of your university-level coursework and/or a list of courses that is informative about your substantive and methodological preparation, including the level at which each course was taken and the grade obtained;
• if not readily apparent from the official transcripts, documentation of all degrees obtained;
if you have not yet completed your doctoral degree, please indicate date of completion and award of the degree (the university-level selection committee will ultimately require a letter from your dissertation committee chair to this effect);
• a research paper or other analytical writing sample, preferably published and in English (for co-authored articles, please indicate your contribution); and
• a list of at least 3 academic references who can speak to your qualification for postdoctoral research. Reference letters are not required for the initial consideration of an application, but we will ask for at least 2 letters should you be shortlisted.
For questions, please contact Tim Büthe at buthe@hfp.tum.demailto:buthe@hfp.tum.de.
The IR Chair strongly supports the TUM's strategic goal of increasing the diversity of its staff. As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, we particularly encourage applications from women, people with disabilities, members of groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the academy, and others who would otherwise increase the diversity of the university's research and teaching staff.
As part of your application, you will provide personal data to the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Please take note of the TUM policy on collecting and processing personal data in the course of the application process pursuant to Art. 13 of the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union (GDPR) at https://www.community.tum.de/en/privacy-policy/. By submitting your application, you confirm to have read and understood the data protection policy.
