Dear colleagues,
we, Sabrina Mayer (DeZIM Berlin & University of Bamberg) and Arndt Leininger (Chemnitz University of Technology), are currently organising a workshop titled "Actors without arena? Bringing the political behaviour of youths and immigrants into the mainstream" which will take place in-person from May 13-15 at the Hertie School in Berlin.
The workshop deals with the topic of youths, immigrants, and politics and involves an interdisciplinary perspective. So far, these societal groups have been largely overlooked and not been taken seriously as political actors by both politics and political science. Because they make up a relatively small part of the population and many, if not most of them, lack electoral eligibility, they do not represent a relevant clientele for political actors. Consequently, they represent an understudied research object for academic research into political behaviour. In our view, this is problematic since the political participation of youths and immigrants will become even more important in the future against the background of increasing transnational migration and demographic change.
We believe that the topic has great scientific potential since research efforts on youths' and immigrants' political beliefs and activities exist in various disciplines. We hope that our workshop will provide participants with helpful feedback for their research and allow them to broaden their network beyond disciplinary boundaries to facilitate future collaborations. We also see the workshop as an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of youths and immigrants in politics. We invite contributions from scholars from political science, sociology, psychology, or related disciplines who work on the political behaviour and attitudes of youths and immigrants using different methodological approaches.
We ask for submissions by researchers of all career levels and especially welcome submissions from early career researchers. Please send us your extended abstract (max. 300 words) by February 15th to arndt.leininger@phil.uni-chemnitz.demailto:arndt.leininger@phil.uni-chemnitz.de and sabrina.mayer@uni-due.demailto:sabrina.mayer@uni-due.de. Thanks to funding provided by Fritz Thyssen Foundation, we can cover travel costs and accommodation for one presenter per paper. We can also cover travel insurance costs due to the insecure travelling situation and, if need be, cancellation fees. The workshop will be held in English.
Best wishes
Sabrina & Arndt
