Postdoc position associated with a new Horizon Europe research project on EU democracy support in its Eastern and Southern Neighbourhoods The Department of Social Sciences and Business, Roskilde University, is looking for a postdoc associated with a new research project commencing on 1 October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as postdoc is for a period of 3 years, of which 60% of the time stems from the research project (involving research, research support of Danish lead partner and administrative tasks) and 40% of the time consists of teaching and supervision activities. It is also possible to establish the position as a pure research position (i.e. research, research support of Danish lead partner and administrative tasks) of 60% (approx. 22 hours per week) employment over 3 years. The project seeks to identify success factors & challenges so that the EU’s democracy support efforts can regain traction and be revamped to make neighbourhood countries more resilient, equitable, inclusive, and responsive to people’s local needs. It offers a great opportunity to connect epistemic communities of researchers, policy makers in EU institutions and member states, practitioners, civil society representatives, and citizen groups in the EU and its neighbourhoods. Building on recent as well as new research the project will develop a theoretical framework for an improved EU democracy support toolkit in both neighbourhoods. This framework will elaborate mechanisms for new practices of (feedback-based) interaction in the EU’s democracy support by establishing and pilot-testing an innovative Democracy Learning Loop. The collected data will create a transparent overview of the EU’s role and its democracy support practices which will in turn be made accessible to a wider audience via a Democracy Support Database and Digital Dashboard. The project will also identify additional tools to mainstream EU democracy support practices in the field of gender equality, digital transformations, trade, migration, energy, and security in its interactions with neighbourhood countries. As a postdoc you will work closely with Danish lead partner Professor Michelle Pace (Roskilde University) and the project’s international consortium. The postdoc will assist with the development of the theoretical and methodological framework and independently carry out assessments of academic literature on democracy, democracy support and contestation as social practices. The post includes tasks aimed at conceptualizing gender equality and the role of digital transformations in relation to democracy support. Finally, teaching and teaching-related tasks are included in the position. The postdoc will also be offered to participate in Roskilde University's university pedagogy and active research environment. Responsibilities and tasks The postdoc will work closely with the Danish Lead partner and the other partners in the consortium’s research team. The specific tasks include: * Literature search, review and co-publications * Pilot testing of project’s conceptual framework * Support of Danish lead partner * (Teaching & supervision) Qualifications A Ph.D. in the field of social sciences as well as experience with qualitative and quantitative analysis and preferably knowledge of democracy/democratization studies and European Union studies. We are looking for a candidate with experience in working independently as well as with other team members. The candidate will preferably have theoretical and practical knowledge about co-creation on democracy support in the EU’s neighbourhoods as well as gender equality and digital transformations. Danish language skills in relation to the mapping of Denmark’s democracy support practices in the neighbourhoods are preferred. Knowledge of other languages pertinent to the project’s research theme will be added advantages.
