Dear Colleagues,

The Institute of Political Science at Leiden University invites applicants for the position of PhD Candidate in Political Sciencehttps://www.universiteitleiden.nl/vacatures/2024/q1/14673-phd-candidate-in-political-science (https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/vacatures/2024/q1/14673-phd-candidate-in-political-science).

The PhD researcher will be part of the project "Do developmental coalitions transform governance? A subnational approach" under the supervision of Dr. Jonathan Phillips, beginning on 1st September 2024. The position is fully-funded and offers attractive opportunities to work on an important academic topic in a dynamic and growing department, and with extensive opportunities for skills development and for conducting fieldwork.

The objective of the project is to generate empirical evidence to assess emerging theories that attribute social and economic development to the political coalitions formed among elites, and between elites and society. It is envisaged that the successful candidate will draw on the recent availability of spatial microdata on surveys and public services to develop local measures of development progress and compare the performance of subnational governments with distinct coalitions, exploiting variation both between subnational units and over time.

The specific focus and research design of the project will be agreed in discussion with the successful candidate and the supervision team, taking strong consideration of the candidate's interests and abilities. The geographic focus of the study targets large federal developing democracies with significant repositories of relevant data - particularly Brazil, India, Mexico, Nigeria and South Africa - and projects could focus on one or more of these cases, depending on the candidate's interests and expertise.

For details on the terms of employment and how to apply, please see the official link herehttps://www.universiteitleiden.nl/vacatures/2024/q1/14673-phd-candidate-in-political-science. Applications must be received by 26th April, 23:59 CET.

Best regards,

Jonathan Phillips
Assistant Professor
