starting in February-March 2025 (tentative). Successful applicants will be

Second Republic (VEARLYDEM)” (Ministry of Science, Innovation and
Universities, PID2023-152743NB-I00)

The successful candidate will become a member of the project research team.
In close collaboration with the research team, the successful applicant
will: develop a PhD dissertation on a topic related to the project, assist
in the development of the research project, present and publish
publications related to the research findings, help organize and
participate in the project’s conferences and seminars.
The applicant's dissertation topic may align with the project's focus, but
we also welcome those interested in broader or related subjects, even if
not directly connected to the Spanish Second Republic.
Summary of the project: The VEARLYDEM aims to examine voting patterns
during early democratic periods, with the Spanish Second Republic
(1931-1939) serving as a case study. The cornerstones of the project
involve creating an expansive quantitative dataset detailing election
results at different geographical levels during the Spanish Second
Republic, the first of its type, and a dataset on legislative speeches. In
addition, the VEARLYDEM project will explore three key aspects of electoral
behaviour during the Second Republic: the relationship between previous
undemocratic experiences and election returns in the 1930s, the effect of
female suffrage on election results, and the potential distortions created
by the electoral system. Overall, the project seeks to contribute to both
academic and societal debates on the factors influencing electoral
behaviour in the elections that took place in the 1930s.

Your profile: Interest in political behaviour, historical political
economy, political geography, and/or electoral systems; quantitative
methodological skills and knowledge of R; training in social science
