Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite paper proposals for a panel on Governing critical materials in an era of rising geopolitical tensions at the 2026 Annual Conference of the European Political Science Society (EPSS) in Belfast, June 18-20, 2026. This panel is organized by Lisa Dellmuth and Matilda Petersson.

We welcome theoretical and empirical contributions focusing on the domestic and global politics of critical materials. This includes (but is not limited to) questions such as:

  • How are states securing access to critical materials amid strategic competition?
  • Under what conditions and how do states cooperate through regional or global organisations and governance institutions?
  • Why are new bilateral and national policy frameworks emerging, and how do these balance trade-offs among environmental, social, human rights, and security concerns?
  • What are the consequences of the politics and regulation of critical materials for political and economic outcomes?

Please see the detailed call for papers attached.

If you are interested in participating, please submit your proposal (max 180 words) to matilda.petersson@su.semailto:matilda.petersson@su.se by November 4, 2025.

We look forward to your contributions and an engaging discussion in Belfast!

Best regards,
Matilda Petersson and Lisa Dellmuth
