Dear colleagues. We are inviting proposals for presentations and participation at a workshop on ‘Food security from a planetary health perspective’, organised by the Global Politics and Development Centre and the Living Sustainably catalyst at Royal Holloway University of London, that will take place online, on June 18, 2024 (afternoon), and in person in London, on June 19, 2024 (morning). This workshop aims to explore the intersection of food security and planetary health, focusing on the complex relationship between human health and the health of our planet. In recent years, concerns about food security have become increasingly urgent, with challenges such as climate change, population growth, and environmental degradation posing significant threats to global food systems. At the same time, there is a growing recognition of the importance of planetary health – the health of human civilization and the state of the natural systems on which it depends. This workshop seeks to bring together researchers to * Examine the connections between food security, in all its aspects (availability, access, utilisation, stability, agency, and sustainability) and planetary health; * Assess how different factors (e.g., multinational corporations, food aid provision, gender/race, water insecurity, technological advances etc.) affect food systems and planetary health; and * Interrogate the pros and cons of different strategies for promoting food security while safeguarding planetary health. Papers based on the presentations will be considered for publication in the forthcoming Handbook of Politics of Food Security (De Grutyer, 2025). We will also use the workshop to discuss potential large grant applications.
