Dear all,

I (Federico Salvati FU Berlin) and Kyle Reed (University of Amsterdam) are
applying to the next ISA 2025 with the following panel.

We are currently reviewing  abstracts for it and you are more than welcome
to submit yours in this is relevant to your research agenda

Language, law and international politics

How do we understand language and rhetoric in international law (IL) – or
the use of IL in different types of language and rhetoric? Increasing
attention has been paid to the role of language in making, structuring, and
sustaining IL. The objects of IL – from treaty texts to court judgments –
are made through language. The use of law – from formalized invocations to
public and political debates – hinges on language. And the critiques of IL
– from its contestation in international organizations to its rejection in
international and domestic politics – are first and foremost expressed
through rhetorical activities.

The aims of the panels are to:

  1. Bring together scholars interested in IL from across theoretical,
    disciplinary, and methodological perspectives to examine the intertwined
    nature of rhetoric, language, and IL;

  2. Examine how new methodologies and theoretical perspectives shift the
    study of IL and international politics;

  3. reconceptualize the liberal idea of interpretation as clarification of
    the norm, instead considering how the study of language informs the idea of
    legitimate interpretation in relation to systems of structure and power;

  4. Study how the competing interpretations create also competing dynamics
    of legitimacy operating in and across different systems of regional and
    international organizations and structures.

The abstracts should be submitted at:
