4 Year Postoc on "Politicians, Policies, and the Reproduction of Wealth"

Dear All,

we are advertising a 4-year, full-time, postdoc position.

The position is in the project "Politicians, Policies, and the
Reproduction of Wealth", funded by the Volkswagen Foundation with 1.6
million Euros. The project focuses on the role of politicians in the
reproduction of wealth in Brazil, South Africa, the United Kingdom and
Germany. Together with an international team of political scientists,
legal scholars, and economists, the project will examine the extent to
which the social and economic characteristics of members of parliament
correspond to those of economic elites, how this affects policy-making
and the incomes of the wealthy. Qualitative and quantitative methods of
data collection and analysis will be used. The other project PIs come
from the University of Strathclyde, the University of Cape Town, and
Fundação Getulio Vargas (São Paulo).

The postdoc will be based in Marburg, but knowledge of German is NOT
needed for the position
.

Tasks:

  • Coordination of the international team
  • Research in the project "Politicians, Policies, and the Reproduction
    of Wealth," especially in work package 3 "Policie
  • Planning, conducting and analyzing elite interviews (MPs, lobbyists,
    experts) on selected policies in Germany and South Africa (or UK)
  • Quantitative analyses of MP profiles and policy outcome
  • Co-authorship of articles

Profile:

  • PhD in political science or another social science subject that is
    relevant to the project
  • Research profile in the field of political behavior, representation,
    comparative political science
  •  Experience in qualitative and quantitative data analysis
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Software skills (in qualitative data analysis (e.g. MAXQDA, nVivo or
    similar) and/or quantitative data analysis (e.g. R or Stata)
  • International academic experience (e.g., PhD or research/study abroad).

We offer a constructive, collegial, working environment in an
international team. In Marburg, the position is integrated into the
"Inequality and Distributive Politics" research team, where practical
and research-related topics are discussed on a weekly basis.
Internationally, we work closely with our project partners. Project
postdocs receive representation on the project's Steering Committee and
participate in the three network conferences (2024 in São Paulo, 2025 in
Cape Town, and 2027 in Glasgow). We offer the opportunity for further
qualification by attending Summer/Winter Schools. Resources to attend
national and international conferences are available. The postdoc can
access project data for single-authored publications. There is the
possibility of a visiting stay at one of our cooperation partners
(University of Strathclyde, University of Cape Town, Fundação Getulio
Vargas (São Paulo).
