Call for Participation: Future of Science Initiative - AI-Accelerated Paper Writing

Event Overview: Join us for a unique dissertation bootcamp designed to enhance your thesis writing process using cutting-edge AI tools. This intensive weekend workshop in collaboration with Springer Nature, hosted at the University of Mannheim, Germany, from September 20 to September 22, 2024, offers PhD students in political science, sociology, or economics an opportunity to expedite their academic writing while experimenting with innovative technologies.

Event Details:

  • Instruction Session: Begin the event with a comprehensive 3-hour instructional session on utilizing AI tools specifically developed to streamline academic research and paper writing.

  • Thesis Work Sessions: Following the instruction, participants will engage in 2.5 days of dedicated thesis work. Participants are encouraged to bring research data to analyze. Faculty members and editorial, content innovation and AI experts from Springer Nature will be present throughout to provide valuable feedback and guidance.

  • Experimental Component: As part of the event, half of the participants will be encouraged to integrate the provided AI tools into their writing process, while the other half will work without them. This setup allows us to measure the impact of AI on writing efficiency and quality.

  • Post-Event Tool Access: All participants will retain access to the AI tools post-event, generously provided by the hosts to support ongoing research endeavors.

  • Publication Opportunity: Participants are invited to submit 6-8 page research notes based on their dissertation work within 6 weeks after the event. Selected manuscripts will be submitted to a prestigious Springer Nature journal for peer review and potential publication. The Editors have expressed interest in reviewing manuscripts from this project.

  • Support Provided: Food and lodging will be fully provided for all participants during the event. Participants are offered travel reimbursements. They are expected to arrive in Mannheim on Thursday. For participants traveling by train, the reimbursement cap is set at €150 for domestic travel within Germany and €300 for travel from neighboring European countries. For air travel incl. airport transfer, we will reimburse up to €250 for short-haul flights, €400 for medium-haul flights, and €600 for long-haul flights, all economy class.

Eligibility: PhD students actively engaged in quantitative social science research within the fields of political science, sociology, or economics. Participants must have their dissertation data ready and be in the writing phase of their dissertation chapters.  Acceptance will be based off of potential for improvement through access to these tools as well as establishing a balanced treatment and control group.
