Dear colleagues,

The James Madison Charitable Trust provides grants for research and education projects on federalism, and I am writing to invite you to consider making an application for projects to begin from April 2026.

The Trust was founded by Professor John Pinder to support and promote studies of federal government whether within or among states, including studies of processes that may lead towards the establishment of such government, and to support or promote education and dissemination of knowledge on these subjects. You can find more information on our website https://www.jamesmadisoncharitabletrust.org.uk. Grants are usually up to £5,000 although a good project may receive more. Expenditure may include research, archival visits, survey costs, book workshops, and organisation of workshops and educational conferences.

If you would like to apply for a grant from the Trust, please send a short outline of your proposal to our chair at David.Grace@cantab.net. If your proposal meets our objectives, we will send you an application form to complete. We can also advise on how to improve your proposal. The deadline for receipt of applications is 1st September 2025.

The Trust is always looking for new trustees. If you or someone you know would be interested in becoming a trustee, please send a copy of your CV to David.Grace@cantab.net demonstrating your interest in federalism and your experience of research or education in this field. David will be happy to discuss what is involved in being a trustee and the board of trustees will be meeting in October to decide on new appointments.

Kind regards,
Melis Kirtilli
Honorary Secretary
