GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences in Cologne, Department Computational Social Science is looking for

2 Postdocs / Senior Researchers in the field of Digital Behavioral Research (working time 100%, limited to 4 years with possible tenure)

GESIS is strategically realigning and growing: Digital behavioral data will be a focus of our activities in the future. The goal across all GESIS departments is to build new tools and infrastructures to support the collection, processing, analysis and archiving of digital behavioral data, and to conduct research on societally relevant questions with new methods and new types of data.

The advertised positions will be part of a new team with a focus on Digital Behavioral Research, in particular the establishment of an app-based infrastructure for the collection of survey data and digital behavioral data. The team will collaborate closely with the GESIS Department Knowledge Technologies for the Social Sciences that is responsible for the technical infrastructure.

Tasks

  • Establishment and operation of services for the social sciences, in particular in the field of smartphone apps
  • Conceptualization and implementation of app-based data collections combining mobile surveys and digital behavioral data
  • Ensuring and researching data quality with regard to sample characteristics and biases
  • Research in the field of digital behavioral data, presentation and publication of research results
  • Acquisition of third-party funding focused on research and research-based infrastructure

Profile

  • Ph.D. in sociology, psychology, political science, communication science, statistics, computer science or a related discipline
  • Internationally visible publications in Computational Social Science or substantive/methodological social science research, preferably with a focus on digital behavioral data, smartphone/sensor based data collection, data linking or survey methodology
  • Expertise in quantitative data analysis and programming (ideally in R or Python)
  • Very good English skills (spoken and written)
  • Experiences in Open Science, research infrastructures, organizational roles or knowledge of German are a plus
