*** PhD position in Economics & Environmental sustainability ***
This PhD position is part of the international research project "In Search of Decoupling: (How) Can We Combine Climate Sustainability with Economic Growth, Good Jobs, and Public Preferences?"https://umu.se/en/research/projects/in-search-of-decoupling/ (funded by the Swedish Research Council). In this position, you will conduct quantitative research on conditions under which societies have already "decoupled" some environmental harms from economic growth, and might decouple more harms (e.g., greenhouse gas emissions) in the future. Such a large-scale sustainability transition depends on societies' macro-politico-economic characteristics and circumstances; sentiments and views of the general public; and preferences and beliefs of industry actors. Therefore, your research will integrate the scientific knowledge from multiple subfields such as international political economy, public opinion, and communication, using advanced quantitative methods for data mining and analysis. There will also be opportunities to get involved in teaching (of related topics) from the second year.
Your profile
- You hold a master's degree in Economics (or a related discipline such as, but not limited to, quantitative political science, computational social science) with a solid academic record. We will consider your application if you are close to completing your master's degree. (Please indicate the anticipated graduation month and year.)
- Always curious and highly motivated to think about complex problems related to environmental sustainability.
- Have the patience to deal with inherently noisy social science data.
- You hold a reasonable basis and strong motivation for acquiring necessary skills in advanced econometrics (e.g., tools for time-series-cross-sectional data) and programming (R, Python) along the way.
- Familiarity with machine learning and natural language processing (quantitative text analysis) is a plus.
- You have a good understanding of teamwork, which means that you are skilled in sensing and executing what needs to be done for the work of the entire project team.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills in English.
We offer
- Research opportunities around highly relevant topics.
- Being part of an internationally active research group and research project. (Your position will be part of a large research project involving scholars in Canada, the Netherlands, and Sweden.)
- Highly connected research environment within the University of Basel. Prof. Aya Kachi's research group is affiliated with the Sustainable Future Research Network of the university, which is a network of researchers in Economics, Psychology, Theology, and Natural Science.
- A contract of a 100% PhD student position, incl. salaries and budget for conference attendance. These employment conditions will be according to the terms of the university and the faculty.
- The initial contract will be for one year. After successful evaluation at the end of the first year, the contract will be extended for another 3 years.
