Dear colleagues,

We cordially invite paper submissions for a panel on Compromise and
Emotions
at the ECPR general conference in Prague next year (4 –
8 September 2023, Charles University).

The panel seeks to connect research on compromise and emotions, both within
the field of political science and other relevant disciplines, such as
philosophy, sociology, or psychology. Oftentimes, compromises are discussed
without including the role of the emotions, while emotion research is
usually not related to compromise. However, in our view, both fields of
research are deeply related and should therefore be connected more closely
than is currently the case. For example, we can easily imagine that some
emotions (such as anger or hatred) can impede our willingness to
compromise, while others (such as hope or empathy) can support compromises.
At this stage, we still lack a systematic overview of the precise
relationships between compromise and emotions, and our panel aims to
address this gap.

The following are some preliminary questions that could be addressed in
this context:

·      Which emotions are generally relevant in the context of compromise?

·      Which emotions can support or impede a compromise?

·      Are some emotions particularly salient in contexts of disagreement?
If so, do these emotions also affect compromise?

·      Does it matter emotionally if a compromise is on moral or non-moral
issues? If so, why?

·      Can the same emotion be both supportive and impeding (perhaps
depending on context)?

These are but a few questions that could be addressed and we very much
welcome different approaches and ideas!

Please send your abstract (250 words max.) to friderike.spang@unil.ch *by
January 15th, 2023. *We are happy to answer your questions and look forward
to receiving your contributions!

Best regards,
