Dear all,
We are cordially inviting submissions for the workshop “The Geopolitics
and European integration” to be held at the ECPR Joint Sessions of
Workshops 2024, Leuphana University Lüneburg (25 – 28 March 2024).
The geopolitical context in which European integration unfolds is
shifting, and with it the dynamics of EU politics and institutional
development. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, a
(temporarily?) re-invigorated transatlantic alliance, and the rise of
China are all affecting the way in which the EU develops. To
appropriately grasp the effects of geopolitics and to account for the
variation in institutional development, mass public perception and
member-state relations across policy fields, theoretical and empirical
accounts of European integration need to more explicitly integrate such
external drivers.
We invite papers on topics and themes including
- The development and better understanding of the geopolitics of
European integration
- The external-internal nexus of EU policymaking between external
factors and internal European dynamics
- EU foreign, trade and enlargement policy
- EU security and defence policy
- EU competition and industrial policy
- EU internal market policy
- EU energy, environment, and climate policy
- Different ontologies, including quantitative and qualitative
methodologies
… and addressing questions such as
- How do outside threats and dependencies affect the path of European
integration?
- How does the shifting geopolitical environment influence EU politics?
- How can we theorise the influence of external drivers on the
contemporary dynamics of European integration?
- How can we empirically assess the influence of external drivers on
contemporary EU institution-building?
Interested to join?
