Dear all,
Ragnhild Louise Muriaas (University of Bergen), Hilde Coffé (University of Bath) and Francesca Feo (University of Bergen) are organizing the workshop "Beyond Parliamentary Recruitment: Gender and Pathways to Power and Influence" at the next ECPR Joint Sessions workshop, 20 -25th of May 2025 at Charles University, Prague.
Despite the increasing number of women in parliaments worldwide, actual political power and influence remain highly gendered. Consequently, many questions remain about how gender—both independently and in combination with other identities—affects political careers, access to political influence and decision-making authority representative institutions.
The workshop sponsored by the Standing Group on Parliaments advances our understanding of when, how and why gender inequality tends to persist in accessing key political roles, exercising power, and influencing policy decisions even after enhanced gender balance in numbers. The workshop welcomes works that focus the complex interplay between gendered structures and resistances to greater diversity and inclusion. It invites paper submissions that revolve around, but are not limited to, the following questions:
-
- How does gender affect pathways to political power and the likelihood for representatives to endure in office?
- How do gender inequalities in MPs' careers affect political influence and policy-making?
3: Why, how and by whom are measures to enhance gender equality in decision-making bodies contested?
4: What strategies are used to make political institutions and outcomes more gender sensitive?
5: How can we incorporate intersectional approaches and post-colonial perspectives into our research?
6: What are the policy implications of unequal gender representation in parliaments and governments?
We welcome different theoretical perspectives and methodologies, and see seek to have a balance between research adopting qualitative, quantitative and mixed-method approaches. Finally, the workshop warmly invites contributions from junior scholars.
Please find more information about the workshop here: https://ecpr.eu/Events/Event/WorkshopDetails/15692
Deadline for abstract submissions is November, 21. For any question, you can reach to the directors of the workshop.
Best wishes,
Ragnhild, Hilde and Francesca
