Making sense of a divided world: 2nd GPREFCZSK Workshop on the study of individual geopolitical preferences

9th-10th March 2026

Institute for Sociology, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava (Slovakia) During 2025, Russian aggression against Ukraine continues with no end in sight. Likewise, geopolitical tensions have remained high or escalated elsewhere: China has maintained military and political pressure over Taiwan, while the Israeli attack on Gaza and its short war with Iran have impacted regional alliances and diplomatic relations worldwide. These examples, alongside many others found on almost every continent, demonstrate that the current international environment is characterised by unpredictability and confrontation rather than cooperation. Given that geopolitical tensions affect the daily lives of millions of people around the world, it is essential for researchers to continue exploring how individuals in different countries and regions perceive and respond to this geopolitical instability. The GPREFCZSK project welcomes submissions that explore individual geopolitical preferences from various angles. Potential research questions in this regard could include (but are not limited to): (1) impacts of different crises and conflicts on individual geopolitical preferences, (2) causes and consequences of geopolitical polarisation for societies and individuals, (3) geopolitical orientations beyond Russia and EU/NATO (support for China, anti-Americanism, etc.), (4) new methods for the study geopolitical preferences (experiments, longitudinal data, etc.), (5) new case studies of geopolitical preferences beyond the West (e.g. Sahelian Africa, India/Pakistan, Latin America, etc.)…

After a very successful first edition in

March 2025, the Making sense of a divided world workshop, organised by the GPREFCZSK project (funded by the Fellowships for Excellent Researchers R2-R4 programme) and the Institute of Sociology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences aims to bring together a group of about ten to fifteen scholars working on geopolitical preferences/foreign policy preferences/support for international organisations. The workshop welcomes scholars from different disciplines such as Political Science, International Relations, Political Geography and International Sociology. Due to the objectives and methodological scope of the GPREFCZSK project, the organisers will prioritize submissions that aim to answer the proposed research questions by relying on a quantitative approach. Nonetheless submissions employing a qualitative methodology had a place in the previous edition of the workshop and will also be considered.

Deadline for submissions:

12th January 2026
