Applications for the Summer Institute in Computational Social Sciences at the University of Bologna (June 11 - June 21) are now open!

The Summer Institute in Computational Social Science is returning to Bologna and will invite 12 (twelve) participants who will have the opportunity to attend and participate in the entire two-week mixed programme at no cost to the programme. We welcome applications from advanced master's students, Ph.D. and postdoctoral researchers, and untenured faculty within 7 years of their Ph.D. from all backgrounds and fields of study, especially applicants from groups currently under-represented in Computational Social Science.

The Summer Institute in Computational Social Science returns to Bologna and will invite  12 (twelve) participants, who receive the opportunity to attend and participate in the entire two-week mixed-mode program with no costs charged for the program.

The instructional program will involve lectures, group problem sets, and participant-led research projects. There will also be outside speakers who conduct computational social science research in a variety of settings, such as academia, industry, and government. Topics covered include text analysis, website scraping, digital field experiments, machine learning, and ethics. There will be ample opportunities for students to discuss their ideas and research with the organizers, other participants, and visiting speakers.

This year’s edition of SICSS-Bologna will also have a particular focus on the issue of political polarization. Participants will thus be instructed to implement the methodological toolbox of computational social science in group projects with the other participants on the topic of political polarization. The program will conclude with presentations of the group projects. For more information about the program, visit our website: https://sicss.io/2024/bologna/

Applicants must submit the following documents (all uploads must be in PDF or MS Word document format): (i) Your curriculum vitae (max 2 pages). (ii) A statement describing any current research and your interest in computational social science (max 1 page, single-spaced). (iii) A writing sample (no more than 35 pages). Co-authored work is acceptable – please describe the contributions of each individual author (2-3 sentences). More information can be found here: https://sicss.io/2024/bologna/apply

There is no tuition for participation in SICSS-Bologna, and we will cover the costs of lunch, coffee, snacks, and one social dinner. Please note that we cannot cover travel or accommodation costs.

The deadline for applications is Sunday, April 25, 2024, at 12 pm (GMT+1)

Since we have limited spots and the admissions are competitive, we would like to encourage you to apply as early as possible.

Do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions.

All the best,
